Top Tile Trends for 2020

Dec 13th 2019

If you can't believe it's almost 2020, we're with you! It seems like we were JUST writing about 2019 tile trends, and now the year is already coming to a close. As the new year approaches, we've been keeping an eye on what's popular in tile design. Without further ado, we're counting down our top 5 tile trends for 2020:

Top Tile Trend #5: Subway Tile Reinvented

Subway tile has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, and we predict it'll keep going strong well into 2020.

While plain white subway tile will always be timeless, you may start seeing new variations on a old classic -  like stacking subway tile rather than staggering it, or choosing a splash of color instead of traditional white. We love adding trim between each row for a fresh, unique look:

Top Tile Trend #4: Handmade Tile

Yes, we realize we're a little biased here but handmade tile seems to have reached a new level of popularity. People are becoming more conscious of where products come from, and how they are made. There also seems to be a new appreciation for the imperfections of handmade items.

Here at Julep Tile we work really hard to make sure our tiles have the upmost quality and consistency - trying to make our handmade tile more "perfect". What's funny is that recently we've seen some of the super huge commercial tile makers (like what you'd find at Home Depot or Lowes) go to extra lengths to make their "perfect" machine made tile look handmade. Oh, the irony.

Top Tile Trend #3: Black Is The New Trendy Neutral

Depending on how long you've been following interior design and color trends, you may remember the brown trend of the early 2000s, or the gray trend that followed and now seems to slowly be coming to an end. (We still love you though, gray). So what's the next trendy neutral, you may ask? Our sources point to black. Black is gorgeous (in small doses!), pairs well with white, wood tones, and color. If you look around, I think you'll notice a lot of the new houses being built are white with black windows and black shutters. You may have also noticed all the white kitchens with black accents. If you'd like to add a touch of black to your backsplash or shower surround, here are a few ideas for inspiration:

Top Tile Trend #2: White Is White Hot

In conjunction with the black trend, white is more popular now than ever before. It's almost like we can't get white to look white enough. While it can be bland, we're pretty excited about this trend. Having mostly white finishes in your kitchen or bathroom means you can decorate with just about any color, metal or wood tone you want.

Top Tile Trend #1: Screw The Trends And Buy The Tile You Love

That's right, we said it. I know we just spent a whole blog post talking about tile and design trends, but in our humble opinion the most important thing to consider when selecting tile is whether or not you LOVE it. Does bright green tile make your heart sing? Buy it. Blue tile with black polka dots? Fantastic. While keeping up with trends can help your house look current and up to date, it's the little things like tile you absolutely love that make your house feel like home.

Questions? Call us! We love talking with clients about their house projects.
