So what’s the secret? How did I learn to decorate my house without going to design school?
Well, I can tell you it took me about 10 years of trial and error to figure it out!
But, I finally realized there’s a simple, straightforward formula for creating a beautiful home that works every time.

- You don’t have to spend years learning “balance, unity and rhythm” in design school
- You don’t have to learn how to “design a home that tells your story” (whatever that means)
- You don’t have to be born with the “interior design gene” (I wasn’t!)
- And you don't have to spend a fortune to make your home beautiful
The way I decorate, you just need to know 3 things:
1. How To Pick A Color Palette
This is the foundation of decorating your room. And not to worry, you don’t have to learn the color wheel or pick colors out of the sky yourself. We’ll use an inspiration piece instead.
Once your color palette is in place, it will tell you what the other colors in the room should be, and make it easy to select the right decor that all looks great together.
2. The Design Principles
These are the things that will make it look like you know what you’re doing!
We’ll cover how to choose the right size for furniture, area rugs, and lamps. We’ll talk about what size throw pillows to use and how many you need.
And my favorite part, we’ll learn how to properly hang your curtains and window treatments. Plus, clever ways to install them to do cool things like make your ceilings feel taller and make your windows look bigger.
3. How To Style
Styling is one of the most important parts of creating a beautiful room, but often the most overlooked. By adding accessories like a bowl of fruit, a stack of books, or a vase of flowers to your room, you’re making your house feel like a home.
Styling is also what I see DIY decorators getting the most intimidated by (right up there with picking paint colors!).
But just like the rest of the process, for styling there’s a system so you’ll know exactly what accessories you’re shopping for and how to arrange them like a pro. No more empty bookshelves giving you anxiety.
How To Visualize Your Room
Now that we have our 3-step process down, we’ll take what we’ve learned and design a room together.
To help illustrate this, I’ll show you my favorite design software (I promise, it’s super easy and not techy!). I’ll also give you a few other options to visualize your room that you can just do with your phone.

Q: Do you teach how to design kitchens and bathrooms?
A: While some of what you learn in this course could be applied to kitchens and bathrooms, it mainly focuses on designing the other rooms in your house - like your living room, dining room and bedrooms. The only reason for this is that kitchens and bathrooms require a slightly different design process. Stay tuned though as we may create a course about kitchens in the future!
