Create A Unique Fireplace With Patterned Tile

Create A Unique Fireplace With Patterned Tile

Posted by Kirsten Sharp on Jun 7th 2024

Fireplaces are often the focal point of the room, which make them a great place to try something unique and fun like a patterned tile.

But with so many options out there, what kind of tile do you choose for a fireplace? And how do you choose a fireplace tile color? What size tile looks good on a fireplace?

I'll cover all that in this article, but first, check out these photos I got from a recent client of ours!

Isn't her living room SO pretty with that gorgeous fireplace?

She chose our Cobham Handmade Tile pattern in Glossy White, and used an off-white grout for a subtle contrast.

Pro Tip: Using a grout in a similar shade to your tile is a great way to keep the pattern from looking too busy.

I love how the tile adds texture and interest to the space without being overpowering.

So, back to today's conundrum. How do you choose the perfect patterned tile for your fireplace?

Here's what I recommend:

1. How To Choose Your Fireplace Tile Color

Think about the existing colors in the room (for example, in your throw pillows, area rug, artwork, etc). Try to find a fireplace tile that repeats some of those colors. This will make your space feel cohesive and well though out.

2. How To Choose Your Fireplace Tile Pattern

Before you decide on pattern, think about what you want the focal point of your room to be.

Do you already have an area rug with lots of color and pattern? Or perhaps you want the artwork over the fireplace to be what catches everyone's attention? If that's the case, keep your other design choices less busy and eye-catching. If you'd still like to use a patterned fireplace tile in this situation, choose one with minimal contrast (like the one in today's client photo).

If you don't have a lot of busy decor in the room and you want your fireplace to be the focal point of the room, you have wiggle room to choose a tile pattern that's busier with higher contrast.

3. How To Choose Your Fireplace Tile Size

Be sure to take good measurements of your fireplace, and select a tile pattern that works well within the area available. Ideally you'll be able to get at least one, if not multiple pattern repeats - Notice in the client photo above how she centered the pattern and was able to get 3 whole tiles across the sides of the fireplace surround, and two whole tiles stacked vertically across the top.

I hope that gives you some fireplace inspiration, as well as some design tips!
